Byrne & Casey: Irish Lightning With a Big Bang >>>

by Irish Paddy Cronan | Tue. July 27, 2010

Last week boxing fans were thrilled to learn Barry McGuigan signed a six fight deal with Setanta Sports. This week Dolphil Promotions revealed former Australian Light Welterweight Champion, Dean Byrne will be appearing on their Aug. 7  card in the Citywest Hotel, Dublin, Ire.

Byrne, a product of Phil Sutcliffe’s Crumlin Boxing Club, has been honing his craft in Los Angeles, Calif., under the guidance of 4-time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach, and will undoubtedly relish his chance to fight in front of his hometown fans for the very first time as a professional.

Headlining the bill is Willie “Big Bang” Casey as he looks to extend his impressive run as a pro to 10-0. Casey kick started his career by traveling to Canada where he demolished Canadian Super Bantamweight Champion Tyson Cave. He followed up on the win by seizing victory in the Prizefighter: The Super Bantamweights tournament, winning the hearts and minds of the British boxing public in the process.

Joining Byrne and Casey on the bill is Irish Boxing’s newest sensation and cult hero, Gavin “The Pimpernel” Prunty. He locks horns with the durable Johnny Greaves.

Limerick-based Alan Donnellan will be looking to improve his record to a perfect 2-0 when he locks horns with Lester Walsh.

Two of Ireland's most improved pros, Anthony Fitzgerald and John Waldron are also set for action on the card. Both men have been rewarded for the hard work they've put in over the last nine months with coveted Irish Titles. Fitzgerald of course, put himself in the mix by defeating Robbie Long in the National Stadium, in what many observers considered the domestic Fight of the Year. Fitzy went on to defeat veteran Ciaran Healy to capture the Irish Title.

Waldron was given the tough assignment of going into Jamie Power’s Limerick backyard for a slobber knocker. Waldron impressed by keeping a cool head and sticking to the game plan laid out by trainer Phil Sutcliffe.

Tickets start at €40 and are available from www.ticketgroup.ie
