OtG Around The World: British Boxing Update >>>

by Greg Paterson | Tue. Feb. 1, 2011

The second edition of Light Heavyweight Prizefighter included a lineup of; Tony Dodson, Travis Dickinson, Llewellyen Davies, Billy Slate, Jack Morris, Joe Smyth, Michael Banbula and Menay Edwards. A pretty obscure bunch, to say the least. The opening matches provided wins for Dodson, Dickenson and Morris by fairly dull decisions. A very exciting two round war between Edwards and Smyth proved to be the only high point of the night. Both fighters were rocked, with Edwards knocked down and nearly out. He somehow recovered to stop Smyth.

With Morris unable to continue due to a broken hand, Sam Couzens took his place and lost to Dickenson in the semi-final. Dodson beat Menay Edwards, but was unable to continue due to cuts.

This cleared the way for Justin Jones to step straight into the final and get knocked out by Dickenson.

Prizefighter has become over-exposed and rammed down viewers necks. It needs to see reinvent itself or stop. It is becoming increasingly poor, and fans are becoming more and more disenchanted with it following each event.

On the bright, side a nice Scotland vs Ireland match up has been inked in the middleweight division between U.S. based Scotsman Craig McEwan, and U.S. based Irishman Andy Lee. Both men were superb amateurs and both are highly accomplished classical stand-up southpaw boxers. The two do battle on the Sergio Martinez vs Serhiy Dzinziruk undercard Sat. March 12, on HBO.

Next week British viewers are in store for a fascinating clash between gutsy Jamie Arthur and the always classy Jason Booth, for the British and Commonwealth Super Bantamweight titles. It should be a very interesting fight, so be sure to tune in.

I like prizefighter, I'd like to see some tougher contenders in the tourneys though.

Thanks for the update GPat. I really miss "The Contender", which was our version of that show. The ratings plummeted because they didn't 'reinvent' themselves, as you have pointed out about "Prizefighter"

@ SG

I think some people do like it and some, like me, have always been sceptical. I have enjoyed 2 or 3 of the shows but lately I have found them stale and repetitive.

@ 1st

I agree there, you need to keep making it fresh to attract and keep viewers. It should be said though a lot of non-boxing fans enjoy Prizefighter.
